The Lindenhof is the site of numerous historical events. In the 4th century, a Roman fort stood on the Lindenhof, and in the 9th century, the grandson of Charlemagne built a royal residence on this site. Until the early modern period, the square was a meeting place for the people of Zurich. In 1798, for example, the oath to the Helvetic Constitution was sworn on the Lindenhof. Today, the remains of the Roman fort and other historical buildings, including the Zurich City Hall and St. Peter's Church, are located at the top of the hill.
