Lake Lugano is a beautiful lake located between Switzerland and Italy. The lake was formed after the Ice Age when two glaciers met, giving it its jagged shape. It is surrounded by hills and mountains and offers spectacular views in all directions. Lake Lugano lies in the southernmost tip of Ticino, the holiday region south of the Alpine ridge, and stretches its arms into Italian territory. Three-fifths of the nearly 50 km² body of water lie in the Swiss canton of Ticino and only two-fifths in the Italian region of Lombardy. While on the Swiss side, alongside Lugano, the village of Morcote—arguably the most beautiful in Switzerland—is well-known, on the Italian side, Campione d'Italia is particularly famous for its elegant casino.
